A well-known athletic coach and community leader, Barbara Humphrey is founder and head coach of the Speed City Summer Track Club and the head track and field coach at Simmons Middle School. A four-year letterman in track and field at Jackson-Olin High School, she earned a full scholarship to The University of Alabama at Birmingham in 1986 as a member of UAB’s first track team. Her school record in the 400 meters still stands today. After earning her degree in history from UAB, Mrs. Humphrey returned to her high school alma mater to begin her coaching career. She has coached athletes such as Vonetta Flowers, who was Alabama’s first African American female athlete to win a gold medal in the Winter Olympics.
