ٺƵ Board of Trustees elected Scott Phelps of Tuscaloosa as its new President pro tempore during its annual meeting in Tuscaloosa on September 1. Phelps has represented Alabama’s 4th Congressional District on the Board of Trustees since 2015. Prior to his election as President pro tem, he served as Chair of both the Finance and Legal Affairs Committees.

UA System Board of Trustees resumes tuition freeze for in-state students as a result of careful fiscal management and the UA System’s commitment to accessible education

ٺƵ Board of Trustees is heartbroken by the loss of Trustee James Wilson III, who passed on March 11, 2023, after bravely fighting a sudden illness.

At its meeting on September 16, 2022, the ٺƵ Board of Trustees unanimously elected Jeff Gronberg to represent the Fifth Congressional District. The UA System Board of Trustees ensures the effective leadership, management and governance of the ٺƵ, which includes three doctoral research universities and a world-class health system. A top employer in the state, the ٺƵ is Alabama’s largest higher education enterprise and educates more Alabamians than any other university system.

ٺƵ Board of Trustees has unanimously named Dr. Charles L. “Chuck” Karr president of The University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH). ٺƵ Chancellor Finis St. John recommended the appointment to the UA System Board of Trustees at its meeting on September 16, 2022.

The University of Alabama at Birmingham broke ground Monday, April 11, 2022, for the new Altec/Styslinger Genomic Medicine and Data Sciences Building and the Marnix E. Heersink Institute for Biomedical Innovation Conference Center.

“Elevating UAH to reach its highest potential is a top priority of the ٺƵ and the Board of Trustees,” said UA System Chancellor Finis St. John. “UAH’s transformation is well underway, thanks to the vision of the Board, the leadership of UAH interim president Dr. Chuck Karr and the resounding support from the Huntsville community and local leaders. We are especially grateful to the Alabama State Legislature for supporting this transformative project and passing one of the most significant appropriations in UAH’s history.”

On the heels of the Alabama State Legislature passing one of the most significant appropriations in UAH’s history, the university is poised to fulfill Huntsville’s STEM workforce needs.

“The addition of the Cooperative Institute to The University of Alabama’s campus bolsters UA’s position at the epicenter of water research and operations,” said UA System Chancellor Finis St. John. “The opportunity to earn this competitive grant and lead the nation in this transformative work providing exceptional educational opportunities for our students would not be possible without Sen. Richard Shelby’s support to bring the National Water Center and U.S. Geological Survey partners to our campus.”

With transformative support of up to $360 million over the next five years from the federal government, The University of Alabama is poised to become a standard bearer in translating water research into operations that improve the nation’s ability to predict water-related hazards and effectively manage water resources.

Chancellor St. John appoints accomplished higher education administrator as next leader of UAH, pending formal approval by UA System Board of Trustees

UA to consider new public policy institute after historic donation

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – U.S. Senator Richard Shelby (R-Ala.) will donate his official Senate papers, records and materials to The University of Alabama at the conclusion of his sixth U.S. Senate term, UA System Chancellor Finis St. John announced today at the UA Institutional meeting of the ٺƵ Board of Trustees. This donation will provide the University with the opportunity to house one-of-a-kind historical records.

The UA System Health and Safety Task Force made the recommendation to UA System Chancellor Finis St. John and the ٺƵ Board of Trustees after assessing statistical data, increased vaccine availability and public health guidelines.

For the fifth consecutive year at the University of Alabama and the fourth consecutive year at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and the University of Alabama in Huntsville, in-state students will not see an increase in base tuition for the 2021 – 2022 academic year.
